Was ist Neurofeedback? Eine therapeutische Methode, die mit Gehirnwellen arbeitet und Therapieerfolge für z.B. Hyperaktivität erzielt. Seit zwei Jahrzehnten in den USA bekannt, beginnt jetzt die Verbreitung von Neurofeedback in Europa und vor allem in Deutschland. Neurofeedback ist auch bekannt als EEG-Biofeedback und hat ein weites Feld von Einsatzgebieten.

ABSTRACT
Since the first reports of neurofeedback treatment in ADHD in 1976 many studies have been carried out investigating the effects of neurofeedback on different symptoms of ADHD such as inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity. This technique is also used by many practitioners, but the question as to the evidence-based level of this treatment is still unclear. In this study selected research on neurofeedback treatment for ADHD was collected and a meta-analysis was performed.
Both prospective controlled studies and studies employing a pre- and post-design found large effect sizes (ES) for neurofeedback on impulsivity and inattention and a medium ES for hyperactivity. Randomized studies demonstrated a lower ES for hyperactivity suggesting that hyperactivity is probably most sensitive to non-specific treatment factors.
Due to the inclusion of some very recent and sound methodological studies in this meta-analysis potential confounding factors such as small studies, lack of randomization in previous studies and a lack of adequate control groups have been addressed and the clinical effects of neurofeedback in the treatment of ADHD can be regarded as clinically meaningful. Three randomized studies have employed a semi-active control group which can be regarded as a credible sham control providing an equal level of cognitive training and client-therapist interaction. Therefore, in line with the AAPB and ISNR guidelines for rating clinical efficacy, we conclude that neurofeedback treatment for ADHD can be considered ‘Efficacious and Specific’ (Level 5) with a large ES for inattention and impulsivity and a medium ES for hyperactivity.

US-Studie: Methylphenidat-Erfolge bei ADHS häufig nicht von Dauer
Langfristig hält die medikamentöse Behandlung des Aufmerksamkeitsdefizit-/Hyperaktivitätsstörung (ADHS) nicht immer, was die kurzfristigen klinischen Erfolge versprechen. In der Nachbeobachtungszeit einer größeren randomisierten kontrollierten Studie hat sich die Wirkung von Methylphenidat deutlich abgeschwächt. Gleichzeitig haben die Patienten die Wachstumsminderung, zu der es zu Beginn der Therapie kam, nicht vollständig aufgeholt. Und die Hoffnung, dass die Therapie die ADHS-Patienten vor späterer Delinquenz und Drogenkonsum bewahrt, hat sich nach Publikationen im Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (Onlineausgabe) auch nicht erfüllt

A direct training of the efficient functioning of the brain, Neurofeedback therapy or treatment is a technique that gives the user the actual or realtime feedback of the brain performance. The activity is measured by sensors on the scalp, or it can be audio vibration and even visual displays. It applies to any aspect of the brain function that can be measured; hence it is a gradual learning process. It is training in self regulation. Also called neurotherapy, neurobiofeedback or EEG biofeedback (EEGBF), this technique provides real time information to the central nervous system (CNS). Some researchers believe that Neurofeedback training is well understood on the basis of classical conditioning and the operant, where in the brain activity changes according to the direction of the trainer which results in positive feedback. Die Thematik Neurofeedback beschäftigt mich seit einer ganzen Weile, aus diesem Grunde war die Session “Brain Computer Interface” von Marco Versace für mich eine angenehme Überraschung.
Eine interessanten Gedankenansatz fand ich den Vergleich von neuronale Netzwerke zu sozialen Netzwerken (twitter / Xing / etc.).
Six degrees of seperation - Netzwerke von Menschen haben 6 Schritte, das Gehirn nur 3 - jedes Neuron ist über höchstens 3 Schritte mit einem beliebigen nächsten verbunden.
Neurofeedback - Diagnose und Feedbacktraining auf Basis der Messung und Echtzeit-Darstellung von Gehirnwellen (EEG).
Neben den therapeutischen Anwendungsgebieten (Migräne / Depressionen / ADD etc.) kann man durch Neurofeedback Leistungssteigerungen erreichen (Konzentration /Flow etc.) und bei Spielen einsetzen (BCI, emotionale Avatare) .
Die Probleme der Spielindustrie liegen in den Gefahren, denn Neurofeedback kann auch das Gegenteil von dem Hervorrufen was gewünscht ist.
Sehr beeindruckend war die anschliessende live Vorführung - ein Computerspiel, bei dem ein Freiwilliger mit seinen Gedanken ein Raumschiff fliegen sollte.
Mit der passenden “Frisur” meldete sich Stefan von galias und er hat sich tapfer durch die Ansage möglichst keinen Muskel-Bass zu erzeugen geschlagen.
Auf das Raumschiff folgte eine Autorennsimulation und dann eine musikalische Neurofeedback-Anwendung, die Musiklautstärke reagierte dabei auf Stefans Gehirnwellen.
Wirklich beeindruckend das Ganze. Ich bin gespant wie sich dieser Forschungszweig weiter entwickeln wird, obwohl ein bisschen beängstigend ist es schon, spontan schossen mir Assoziationen zu Clockwork Orange in den Kopf..
